Thomas and Friends Boulder Mountain Set

by Lisa Nothnagel

My son, aged 2, is a boy of few words, but one of his favorites is "Choo-Choo!" He loves trains!

He was beside himself when he saw this set. All he kept saying was "Open! Open! Open!" So, breakfast was temporarily put on hold and this mom got to work setting up the train set. The recommended age is 3 and up, but he had no problem moving the trains around the track.

To set the track up as the instructions recommend requires adult assistance. I could not envision a 3-year-old looking at the directions and being able to put the track together. I had my 5-year-old daughter give it a try and she could not do it either. You can, however, make up your own style of track. One time when I was a little tuckered out and my son wanted to play trains, I just put all the track in a circle using the bridge for some extra fun, and he had plenty of fun just the same. He even started taking out the leftover pieces of track and putting them here and there on the floor.

Thomas and Friends Boulder Mountain Set includes a mountain, a boulder, 2 trees, a house to topple over, the bridge, 26 pieces of track, a "T" crossing with 2 stop signs, and last, but not least, 3 trains (Thumper, Rusty and Oliver). There are two separate tracks, one being train tracks and the other being a road. The road connects together by the "T" crossing and goes under the bridge. The boulder goes on top of the mountain and is triggered by Thumper at the bottom, where he/you depress part of the mountain and the boulder comes crashing down into a 3-block house (which I'm happy to say is connected to a rope so the pieces don't go flying).

Very involved - lots of fun - great set!
