A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound

Average User Rating:

Novelist John Irving brings to life this story of young Tom, awoken by a noise at night. Tom and his father eventually uncover the source of the sound, but Tom's brother, two-year-old Tim, is still unsure about what's causing the noise.

The story idea came from the villainous author of children's books in Irving's novel "A Widow for One Year."

Despite the creepy background to the story, the book does a fair job of helping to explain the idea that even scary noises have a commonplace source. Tom's imagination leads him to offer several incredible explanations while he and his father explore the house looking for the cause.

The illustrations, drawn in a charcoal-drawing style, give shadow-and-light effects that stir the imaginations of children.

I enjoyed reading this book to my two sons, ages four and two, who were especially excited by the similar ages of Tom and Tim.
