All About Scabs takes you on a journey through a child's thought process regarding the science behind a scab. A child's view of scab and the scientific explanation of a scab are quite different. From scraping the skin to the healing of the skin lead to the reasoning as to why you shouldn't pick the scab. This short narrative covers all the bases.

All About Scabs is unique book considering its content. This book gives you a chance to understand what a child would think of the scab inhabiting a spot on his knee or his elbow, however, the reading content was not attractive.

Scabs should not be itched, explains author Genichiro Yagyu, scabs are a healing process that is a part of the human body's incredible biological design. The scientific explanation, though slightly boring, partners with the imaginations of the children that are featured.

How do you get a scab? You can get a scab by falling of your bike, falling down or getting a blister from your shoe. What is a scab actually made of? Well, there are a variety of childish interpretations before the book gets down and dirty about the science behind that scab. Until that point, the narration has some slightly skewed views of what a scab is. "Maybe a scab is made of something like poop that comes out of a sore. It's the poop of a sore!" One child laughs. I failed to see the humor. "My scab is thick, like a cookie. Wonder if I could eat it?" states another child. Once the children are done guessing what a scab could possibly be, science takes over and the words I read sent me back to seventh grade biology class where I was more interested in watching the clock than listening to my teacher.

Eventually, one child realizes the healing purpose of the scab and why you should not pick your scab. The words are dressed up with black and orange illustrations that did not catch my child's eye at all. So, if you are looking for a unique science lesson, this book could be what you want. If your looking for some bedtime reading or quiet time with mom and dad, I would search elsewhere.
