Alphabet Poem

What a fun book!

Starting in on the whimsy right away, the author whisks readers off to an imaginative world where "owls open ovens" and "ice cream is itchy." Contemporary collages and splatter painted pages capture kids' imagination from the beginning.

Michael Rosen and Herve Tullet have teamed up to bring children this fantastic flight of fancy. Their language is lyrical and vivid. Their artwork vibrant, yet simplistic, giving kids the courage to try it on their own. I'd use this book in a classroom to share the simplistic beauty of language. As a complementary project, kids could choose a letter and a set of paints to make a page of their own, expressing creativity in a meaningful way. I can't wait to share it with some of the other kids in the family!

Check out this book. You won't be disappointed!

Tips

Crack open the paints and paper, and help your kids let their imagination loose. Talk about other things the letters could stand for that would make fun pictures to paint. Could 'L' stand for "Llamas Licking Lemons?" How much fun would that be to create an illustration for?

Pros

Short, fun language.

Bright, engaging illustrations.

Cons

Some of the pages don't flow as nicely as others, so as you read it with your child, you'll have to change your rhythm to make the poetry make sense.
