As Long as There Are Whales

Average User Rating:

"Mommy, when I grow up can I be an encyclopedia?" "You can be anything you want. But first let's work on your translation homework."

Anything and everything you want to know about whales can be found in this book. Factually, this can fuel an entire research project, and satisfy much of a young person's curiosity about these ever intriguing mammals. The illustrations are colorful and descriptive. The author shows apparent love for the preservation of the species.

However, this is an obvious translation. The pages do not flow well and the catch phrases sound like a tourist caught in a time warp.

The structure of the book has no, well... structure. We learn about genesis, then we jump to feeding patterns, to classification, to historical bytes, and then back to classification. I found myself wondering if some pages had stuck together while I read through it.

Tips

Use this to supplement whale research, or add to a collection. Relying on this alone may cause such utterances as "Big love is what right whales do to allow survival".

Pros

Visually, it's an A+. And sometimes that's all one really needs. Don't reject this book.

Cons

Not a superior composition. But if I had to save a whale or do a re-write, you can bet I'd leave my editor and word processor at home.
