Be Healthy! It's a Girl Thing: Food, Fitness, and Feeling Great
Average User Rating:
A must-have reference book for the fitness-minded teen!
This is a great reference book for teenaged girls, focusing primarily on fitness and eating healthy. It also provides tidbits of information on other subjects, including self-esteem issues, relationships with family and friends, and alcohol/drug use. Website addresses on related subjects are given as well.
When I first asked my 12-year-old niece if she would like to read this book, she said, "Thanks a lot!" She obviously took it the wrong way and was little offended. So, unless you're absolutely sure she would want it, I would suggest letting teen girls pick this book out for themselves.
After having convinced my niece that I only gave her the book because she was the only soon-to-be 13-year-old girl in the family, she agreed to give it a look-over. Her thoughts on it were "great book for someone who's interested in that kind of stuff, but it isn't really my kind of book." I would have to agree with her on that one -- not a book for someone who has absolutely no interest in health and fitness. (Or then again, is it?)
I am into "that kind of stuff", so naturally I thought this book was great. But after talking to my niece, I realized that not too many girls her age are into health and fitness, at least, none of her friends anyway... I think that this book is better suited for girls who are at least 14, where the topics contained within the book, might be more of concern to them.
The book is well written for teens because it offers advice without sounding "preachy". And keeping it as a reference allows them to implement lifestyle changes at their own pace.
