What It’s About
Abigail and her friends go back to help Sacagawea find her dreams. Tired of feeling useless, Sacagawea is on the verge of abandoning Lewis & Clark as they trek out west. Abigail helps Sacagawea discover dreams of her own, and in turn, help Lewis & Clark discover the American west.
What Parents Need to Know
The “Blast to the Past” books are a good introduction to history for preteen readers, both boy and girl. Mr. C’s has a magical book that lists historical people who are losing their dreams. A group of students, led by Abigail, go back in time to help the historical figures get their dreams back. This book, “Sacagawea’s Strength,” gives great detail and information about Lewis & Clark and their Indian guide, Sacagawea.
The Bottom Line
This book blended fact with fiction in a very entertaining way. I really liked that there were photographs in the back of the book of Lewis & Clark’s maps, as well as a coin dedicated to Sacagawea. The “Blast to the Past” books are a great way to get children hooked on history.
The Scoop
This is a quick read, full of interesting information and fun characters. Preteens should enjoy it because Abigail and her friends are easy to relate to, and the history aspect is presented in a very accessible manner.
