Bubblegum Delicious: Poems
What a great book for all budding young poets!
As a young boy and his dog wander through the neighborhood, they happen upon many different things. From waves to spider webs, donuts and music -- they find things that every kid, boy or girl, will be able to identify with and enjoy.
The poems in this book deal with a wide range of topics and emotions. Many were quite light but many deal with much heavier issues. A few of the poems touched on the subject of death. Sometimes subtly, sometimes rather harshly. For me, these poems hit a nerve as my daughter, aged 5, has just recently had to deal with the death of a close family member.
While reading this book, I received many questions, like: What does "deceased" mean, Mom? What is a "coffin"? Will you REALLY die if you were to eat toe-jam pie?
Of course, I answered them the best I could, but the next time we read the book I just opted to skip a few pages. For right now, it's just easier for me to avoid such topics. Once more time goes by, it'll be easier to answer some of the questions that she wants/needs answers to. When that happens, we'll read the book without skipping pages.
For now, there are many cute, bouncy and wonderful little poems in this book as well, like: Bubblegum DeliciousÂ… Wrap you up in bubble wrap, Wrap you up in gum, Wrap you up in wonderful 'Cause you're the special oneÂ…
A much nicer bedtime read.
