Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #1: Wolf Brother

by Emily-Jane Orford

Torak has a clear vision of what is evil. It comes in the form of a murderous bear. The bear kills Torak's father; but not until Torak promises his father to take a journey to find the Mountain of the World Spirit. Many have died trying to find the Mountain of the World Spirit. It is believed to be the power of good that holds the evils of the world at bay and keeps the world safe. Torak will have a guide, in the form of a wolf cub and he will also have a friend to help him on his journey.

Torak's journey begins with his father's death. He must escape a murderous bear and fulfill the promise he made to his dieing father. His journey takes him through all kinds of uncharted landscapes as he follows his guide, a young wolf cub with whom Torak is able to communicate.

As he journeys towards the Mountain of the World Spirit, Torak hones his skills as a tracker, a hunter and a survivor, skills his father taught him well. The journey is also one of discovery since his father had not told Torak everything he needed to know about himself. At first, Torak doesn't even understand why or how he can communicate with the wolf cub.

Torak meets his first real friend, Renn, who accompanies him on part of his journey and Torak discovers the good powers of friendship, something he never knew when he and his father kept to themselves in the forests. Torak's journey ends in success; but it leads to greater journeys not yet discussed, journeys which will continue to fight the battle between good and evil.
