Claire's Magic Shoes (Claire's Everyday Adventures)

by Candice Cooper

Claire, her dog Pepper, and friend Robbie spend the day at the local children's hospital in an attempt to cheer up patients.

They immediatly befriend Julie, a girl who broke her leg falling off a horse. As they play, Claire notices a boy who only sits forlornly at a window. She learns his name is David and tries many ways to convince him to join the play group. Nothing works and David eventually returns to his room to be alone. But Claire never gives up.

Her perseverance pays off and she breaks through to David learning of his dream to play piano in an orchestra. Unfortunately, he is undergoing chemo therapy which leaves him too weak to practice. With the help of Claire and her friends, David uses his imagination to fulfill his dream.

"Claire's Magic Shoes" is a great way to introduce children to hospital life and childhood illnesses. It clearly portrays the benefits of making an extra effort to befriend a sick or lonely child. A wonderful children's book for the whole family.
