Colors, Counting, Shapes! A Shape Sorter Box

by Carolyn R. Drebin

This is both toy and book: 15 little books in different shapes, each teaching something different. In other words, there are square, rectangle, oval, triangle and circle-shaped books which fit through their corresponding holes in the box. Each little book has "counting", "shapes" or "color" subjects, illustrated with characters from Nick Jr. -- i.e., Nickleodeon charactres Dora the Explorer and Blue's Clues.

This would be a fabulous toy if it weren't so cheaply made. My chief problem with it is that the shapes don't fit through the shape sorting box properly. And of course the more one forces them through, the more likely they will ruin the box itself. This is basically "fun with cardboard". The shape sorter box needs to be much sturdier and preferably made out of plastic, or even wood. Little hands are tough on their toys and this one didn't see though the week without looking frayed and on its last legs.

That said, the little books themselves are small enough to be exciting for little hands, but big enough to give them something to grab on to, and to actually read. My son loves playing with the books -- though he uses them more like blocks. They are thick and sturdy and, unfortunately, a lot of fun to throw around!
