Does a Mouse Have a Mommy?

by Carolyn R. Drebin

A book about mommies, which animals stay with them, which don't, and why.

Which animals have mommies? Which ones stay with them? And which ones need love, just like humans? This book tells us about different animals and their moms.

This is a book, which, from the outset, looks like it could be an entertaining, funny story. However, it's actually full of facts about parenting in the animal world. The illustrations are quite sweet but the "story" itself is too factual for young children.

In the end, the author goes through the human babies, who have the longest childhood of all, and there is a subtle humor which pokes through. But I felt there was a clear discrepancy between the pictures and the words. I almost wanted to see real photos of the animals, rather than cartoon pictures. Or, conversely, a more animated tale would serve the illustrations. As it stands, however, this is an informative book -- who knew a mouse grows to its full size in less than two months?

Overall, this is a cute book, but I did feel it suffered from information overload. It's nice for the kids to be able to compare the animal world to their own, but I felt this book was lacking in humor and fun, despite the illustrations which might suggest otherwise.

Pros

Illustrations are cute. There are interesting facts for older kids.

Cons

Dry narrative. More like reading a chidren's encyclopedia than a bedtime story.
