Eight Lights for Eight Nights (Let's Celebrate Series)

by Jenna Bayley-Burke

"Read it again." My three year old asked when I finished the story of Hanukkah as told in Eight Lights for Eight Nights by Debbie Herman and Ann Koffsky. I was a bit surprised. Both he and his one-year-old brother sat still through the entire narrative. We'd been reading Hanukkah books all week, that never happened before.

On the second read through I read more than just the story, relating the highlighted "fun facts" and asking questions about the wonderful illustrations. The writing is simple, yet historically accurate. Herman and Koffsky tell the story without talking down to kids, which even the littlest ones appreciate.

More than just a retelling of the timeless story, Eight Lights for Eight Nights is a collection of recipes, games, and crafts to make the holiday special. Instructions for making two different menorahs are straightforward and easy to understand. I was intrigued by the oil Hanukkiah made from nine baby food jars.

Tips

Most of the crafts can be done without a special trip to the craft store. We particularly loved dreidel painting.

Pros

Projects run from very simple (my seventeen-month-old loved to potato stamp wrapping paper) to challenging (I don't have the patience for glue to dry, so making my own dreidel was out). There is something for almost every age group.

Cons

Most of the crafts require adult supervision, but you won't mind.
