Fires!
In this 97-page book of short, true stories, author Kyi uses real people (some children) who were involved in the tragic fires either as survivors, victims, or even those responsible for the destruction. It's non-fiction that reads like fiction and is exciting and dramatic.
You can almost see the blinding flames, feel the waves of heat, and smell the choking smoke. The stories can be read by children on their own, or can be read by an adult. The introductory chapter records some myths about fire that were handed down by story tellers from various cultures. Also included is trivia such as how firefighting has evolved over the centuries, and tidbits about fire-related inventions, who invented them, when they were invented, and how they've helped fire departments and families.
These stories certainly stirred my emotions. I found myself getting choked up even as I read some of the heartbreaking tales out loud to my family. The book is a great read. It's certain to draw out many emotional responses. The author did a fine job.
