Free to Be You and Me

by Dianna Johnston

Free to Be You and Me is the brainchild of Marlo Thomas. It is a very unique book of stories, poems, and songs aimed at encouraging kids to dare to be themselves! Marlo, along with some very talented friends, has created a masterpiece. This book conveys a message to all kids to break free from stereotypes and prejudices, to spread their wings, to think and grow beyond all limitations, to define their own futures and let nothing stand in their way.

My son and I enjoyed the poetry and stories very much. Although some were more than a little unusual, we found them all to be inspiring. I was worried at first that it might be too deep to hold my son's attention but once again I underestimated him. I could see the little gears turning in his head behind his furrowed brow, which meant that he was completely captivated, and carefully considering every word.

We had a lot of fun with the songs. We just made up our own tunes because I can't read music and there isn't a musical instrument anywhere in the house. We didn't let that stop us though! Sometimes it is more fun to make it up yourself. Anyway, the message is the more important factor and I feel confident that this was a rewarding experience for my son.

I highly recommend that every parent take the time to share this remarkable experience with his or her child.
