Freewalker (The Longlight Legacy)

by Jillian Gregory

Freewalker is the second installment in the Longlight Legacy trilogy. It picks up where The Longlight Legacy, The Dirt Eaters left off. Fantasy and Science Fiction fans will be delightfully impressed with Freewalker. The story involves a powerful child named Stowe and her brother Roan. In the Dirt Eaters, Stowe and Roan were separated when their city was ravaged by a devastating war. Stowe became an icon of the city, while Roan went into hiding, fearing for his safety. The siblings wish to find each other. They live in vastly different areas and utilize the Dreamfield as a means to search for each other.

There are several conflicts and subplots in this story. For example, both Stowe and Roan have special powers. Using her mind, Stowe can inflict pain on others causing bleeding from the brain and eyes. Stowe has become a dirt eater. She eats dirt to immerse herself into the Dreamfield. Roan is skilled with the sword and he wants to protect the children that escaped with him during the devastation in Longlight. Throughout the story we discover the purpose of these powers.

This story is very descriptive. There are several scenes that are very gory. There are walls filled with bleeding meat, leech invested pools, and the parts of children used for restoration of the older generation. The vivid description is magnificently imaginative, but at times every little detail tended to slow the pace of the story.

The plot is well crafted and intricate. The author has taken great care and precision to create a believable fantasy world and all those that inhabit its borders. I would recommend this young adult fantasy novel for adult readers as well.
