Ha! Ha! Ha!: 1,000+ Jokes, Riddles, Facts, and More

by Lisa Leuck

Ha! Ha! Ha! written by Lyn Thomas and published by Maple Tree Press is (just as the title states) a book jam-packed with jokes, riddles, unusual facts, illusions, and generally funny stuff aimed at ages 6 - 10. The book uses speech bubbles, line drawings, and op-art type photos to further enhance the hilarity.

There are a lot of joke books out there for kids right now, but Ha! Ha! Ha! is something different and refreshing in many ways.

The comic book style usage of speech bubbles within other, larger pictures or photos is extremely kid-friendly and should be easy to read for most independent readers of about 2nd grade and up. For the younger set, it could be a great read-aloud or car trip book to keep those back seat drivers entertained. The artwork itself is especially hilarious, and there's a little something for everyone.

One section I particularly enjoyed called "Is Your Computer Running?" is full of word plays for computer lingo and online abbreviations, many of which I'd never heard. The content is a nice mix of those old tried and true kid-ticklers and many jokes and facts that are fresh or freshly done.

Tips

As with buying any special interest book, make sure your child likes and understands jokes and word plays so that they can enjoy the many different kinds of humor without always asking what the joke means. Also make sure that your child likes an all black and white format, as there are no color illustrations except on the cover.

Pros

There are just so many jokes in this book! It would make an excellent gift for kids and those who love them and work with them every day, such as teachers and day care providers. Its format is an hilarious hodge-podge of art that is also simply fun to page through.

Cons

The section divisions are misleading and don't strictly follow their purpose. For instance a section called "Doctor, Doctor!" has only two pages depicting chimps dressed as physicians spouting doctor jokes, and the rest of the section is a mixture of other jokes having to do with animals, professions, and crossing the road.

Disjointed but otherwise excellent format.
