Hair: A Book of Braiding and Styles

by Candice Cooper

Long hair is seldom prettier than when it is braided, but the work is tedious so many of us just clip it up and try to make it look the best we can. Never again. "Hair: A Book of Braiding and Styles" will give you the know-how to create the styles you are looking for.

I have always kept my hair long so styling it can be a challenge even on my best hair days. And the girl's hair...forget it! When I got this book for review, I have to admit, I was not expecting much of it. What a surprise I got. Right off I noticed the three, high-quality hair scrunchies in a keepsake box which is attached to the front cover and the fact that the book is spiral-bound is a superb bonus, as the book can be laid flat making working out of it even easier. Needless to say, I was intrigued.

On my first glance through I was completely transfixed by the beautiful illustrations. Besides braids, there are updos and twists. The 32 hairstyles are so lovely and complex-looking, that I couldn't believe one could accomplish any of them with only two hands, and never on one's own hair. Was I ever wrong!

The book assured me that I would be able to braid my own hair by using their easy-to-follow instructions so I choose the french braid to start with since it has always bewildered me and I have not been able to master it despite repeated attempts. It took me about 45 minutes to complete and the end result looked perfect and I did it myself!

I was so excited, I grabbed a child and set to work. It was a bit harder to do on someone else since the illustrations are first-person (and my model was squirmy), but a few hand modifications later and my 4-year-old was sporting a graceful do.

This book is a must-have if you have long hair. I have yet to find a book as easy to use as this one which makes it a very practical gift that will keep on giving each time it is used. Stock up, because once you start wearing these styles, others are going to want their own copy of "Hair: A Book of Braiding and Styles."

Tips

The attached box with the scrunchies makes it impossible to stand the book up if you are wanting to sit to work from it. But don't despair, it is easily removed with a razor and ruler and neither the book nor the box will be harmed from the process. Also, most of the styles in this book are for older teens and women, but Anne Akers Johnson has made another version for younger girls called "Braids and Bows."

Pros

Easy to follow instructions. 32 hair styles to choose from. The illustrations are remarkable.

Cons

Geared more towards teens and women.
