I Have to Go!

by Colleen Kessler

Andrew never needs to use the bathroom when he is asked. He always finds the most inopportune times to "have to go!"

This story chronicles a typical problem faced by parents of toddlers and young children. A child has to go to the bathroom when he has to go! Parents always ask their children to use the bathroom before long car rides, bed time, and meal times. But, inevitably, the child will need to go when it is the most inconvenient.

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when the mother and the father bundle Andrew up in his snowsuit, hat, gloves, scarf and boots so he can go play outside. They ask him if he is sure he doesn't have to go before they get all of his things on. As soon as the last zipper is zipped — Andrew shouts out that he has to go! So, as fast as they can, the mother and the father unravel him so he can run into the bathroom. I can remember doing that to my parents all the time when I was younger.

I think this is a cute story. My potty-training son loves it. We read it each night and then use the potty before bed time. It is very realistic and easy for a young child to follow. The illustrations are nice, too. I particularly like the cover illustration showing the stress on Mom's and Dad's faces as Andrew shouts from the backseat of the car, "I have to go!"

All in all, I think this is a good book with a cute story. Children will enjoy it.
