I Want a Dog
A whimsical story about a little girl who dreams of having a dog and how she tries to fulfill that dream.
"I want a dog." Four little words...words that most parents, like me, have probably heard at one time or another.
May, the little girl in this story, is obsessed with wanting a dog of her own. Her bedroom walls are plastered with numerous pictures of dogs. Even her classmates at school all look like dogs to her when May sits at her desk daydreaming. Every time she asks her parents if she can have a dog they tell her she will have to wait until she is older. That's not good enough for May. She wants a dog right NOW. This persistent little girl tries every scheme she can think of to persuade her parents to let her have a dog.
Author and illustrator Khalsa did a great job showing us in words and pictures the typical actions and reactions of a child who doesn't get her own way. In fact, half way through the story May stomps up to her room and throws a tantrum. It's in the midst of throwing and kicking her toys around that she quite accidentally discovers a temporary substitute for a dog -- her rollerskate!
By treating her rollerskate as her dog, in the days and months that follow, clever May trains herself to be a responsible pet owner. Along the way she starts a new fad in her neighborhood as all of her friends start walking rollerskates too.
I laughed out loud while reading this book to my grandson. Whether you read it to a child or the child reads it, you're certain to hear plenty of giggles.
