Japanese Children's Favorite Stories

by Michelle Goodearl

When I first began to read this, I was excited to learn of another culture's favorite children's stories. I was eager to learn and share with my child. However, the more I read, the more I was suprised at the violence that was in these stories. I do agree that raising awareness for other cultures is key in raising a well-rounded, tolerant child, but this book is not the way to do it. At least not for me.

The stories were interesting until inevitably there would be some sort of violence that changed the tone of the story. I had to edit a lot of each story to be able to read it to my 3 year old son. The illustrations and the stories were not was I was hoping for.

Pros

It is a nice book if you can edit the language and story lines to your own personal preferences.

Cons

Unexpected violence.
