Kevin Goes To School

by Kimberly M. Hutmacher

It's Kevin's first day of school, but once he's there, he isn't sure he wants to stay!

Kevin has first day jitters, just as many children entering school for the first time have. It isn't long though, before Kevin's tears are a thing of the past. A smile graces his face as he shares his experiences watching a puppet show, making a paper hat, building with blocks, and most importantly, making a new friend. The illustrations are bright and fun. As I read the story to my children, my daughter empathized with Kevin. She recalled a few children crying on the first day of kindergarten last year. She also made my son, who is entering preschool in the Fall, feel better. She assured him that he would get to do all of the fun stuff that Kevin got to do, too. The book is very short and the text is sparse, but it's just long enough to do the job!

Pros

This tiny book gives frightened children great comfort as they prepare for their first day of school. The backdrop of each page is a different colour. The book can act as a tool for teaching small children their colours.

Cons

It may not be appropriate for a child who doesn't seem to have any reservations about going to school. My daughter was like this, and books with this approach would've planted negative thoughts where none previously existed. Though the book was perfect for my timid son who is entering preschool in the Fall.
