Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning Movie

by Meagan Myhren-Bennett

An enjoyable, can't-put-it-down reading experience. The Baudelaire children match wits with Count Olaf, but who will come out the winner?

The story opens with the narrator, Lemony Snicket, warning the reader of the unhappiness that they are about to experience in this story. Thus the title - The Bad Beginning.

After the dire warning has been issued, the Baudelaire children (Violet - 14, Klaus - 12, and Sunny -infant) are joined by Mr. Poe at Briny Beach. He regretfully informs them that their parents have died in a fire and they have nothing left except their fortune, which can't be touched until Violet reaches 18 years of age.

Mr. Poe leaves the orphans at the mercy of Count Olaf, a stage actor and the only living relative fit to be their guardian. With Count Olaf, the children find themselves with meager comforts, endless chores and are subject to the Count's fits of rage. They overhear Count Olaf plotting to get his hands on their inheritance, but are told they can do nothing about it. Count Olaf's web of deception grows and the children have to use their wits and quick thinking to save themselves and their fortune.

An entertaining read for the whole family, that showcases what children can accomplish with cleverness and courage. Sure to be enjoyed by kids and adults alike!
