'Lovely Ruby and the Mermaid' is greeting card designer and magazine illustrator, Nancy Trott's, first book. The whimsical drawings are beautiful, almost compensating for the not-so-strong plot.
A nameless narrator tells the story of her best friend, lovely Ruby, who has moved away and sends letters and packages from her new home by the sea. Ruby finds a lovely shell. She investigates, finding strands of sparkling golden mermaid hair inside.
The mermaid's magical appearance is the highlight of the book, as Ruby shares her mermaid daydreams with her friend. Ruby misses her friend, sending her the mermaid shell to share the magic. Both girls can confide how much they miss each other to the empathetic mermaid. The story of the mermaid helps continue the friendship for the girls.
