My Creature Teacher

by Melissa Yarmus

"My Teacher Creature" brings new meaning to the term "meet the creature!" This beautifully written and illustrated story depicts all the tasks a teacher does in a given day. However, this isn't an ordinary teacher or an ordinary class. Both students and teacher are creatures of various colours, shapes and sizes. The teacher in the story requires her students to follow basic rules, such as putting up paws before shrieking and hanging up spider sacks. She decorates the classroom with poison ivy and fills desks with creepy things. She doesn't accept homework that pets, such as werewolves, chew and makes her students complete spelling tests. The creature teacher, however, also looks out for her students. In a wonderfully illustrated scene, she sends the class bully to the 'headmonsters' room where he faces the consequences of his actions. This book is recommended for children ages 3-6, but older children would also enjoy reading the book and hearing it read aloud. The book is written in rhyme which adds to the enjoyment of its audience. Some of the rhymes were a little clumsy, however, the children I read it to easily chimed in with the rhyming words. The detailed illustrations enhance the stories ghoulish theme. The large print and limited amount of sentences per page encourages begining readers to read along. "My Creature Teacher" takes the normal student-teacher relationship and alters it to an outrageous setting. It reminds the students that although they might not like everything their teacher does, especially the rules, their teacher will always be there for them in then end.
