My School's a Zoo!

by Claudia Ann Sodaro

Imagination plus, author, Stu Smith, creates a colorful school atmosphere where the school principal, a tiger, gnaws on bones; the substitute teacher is a bear. A simple trip to the zoo changes one student's perception about his school. Pythons slither on the ceiling, worms wriggle in every book, a lobster pops out of his lunchbox and hippos swing on swings. Told in rhyme, little ears love the sound as well as the sights in this picture book.

The children I read to laughed with delight at such possibilities. They named the animals as we went along, enjoying David Catrow's wonderfully apt illustrations.
