Okomi Wakes Up Early (The Okomi Series #6)
This book is based on real events, and chimpanzee behaviors, as observed by Dr. Jane Goodall, in the wild.
"Okomi Wakes Up Early" is a story about a frisky little chimpanzee that's tired of staying asleep.
He wants to go on a playful morning-time adventure through the forest. Though his mother, Mama Du, is very hungry, she accepts that her darling little Okomi is not yet ready to eat and that he is otherwise interested.
Instead of giving into her own appetite, Mama Du just laughs and chases Okomi through the forest. In doing so she hopes to forget her own growling tummy, assured that Okomi would soon be tired and hungry enough to eat as well.
This story shows how, especially in the early years, mothers unselfishly put their children's wants and needs ahead of their own.
I'm not sure if either of my children picked up on the storyline, but it's a great book to have in their library, even if they only thought of it as a cute "chimpanzee story". Books like these can open doors to many topics of conversation.
There are 8 Okomi stories that you can enjoy and all are based on real events and chimpanzee behaviors in the wild as observed by Dr. Jane Goodall.
