Out on the Ice in the Middle of the Bay

by Kimberly M. Hutmacher

Mother goes visiting, Father takes a nap, and little Leah wanders outside of her home to discover the world.

Leah wanders passed the church, down the beach, and out on the ice towards an iceberg. At the same time, a Baby Nanook has wandered away from his home and his Mother Polar Bear, and he also finds himself on the iceberg. Soon Leah finds herself face to face with Baby Nanook, and soon she's found that she has a new friend. At the same time, Leah's father has awaken to find Leah gone and Baby Nanook's mother has realized her baby is gone. They both frantically search for their babies! It isn't long before they find themselves on the iceberg with their babies in a tense confrontation, both fearful and distrustful of the other. Tragedy is avoided when both parents realize that they've found what they were looking for and that both of their children are safe.

Tips

The father in this story uses a gun to threaten the Mama Polar Bear. Although, that particular scene didn't seem to bother my six year old, it may foster questions from some children. Be prepared to explain to your child how fearful the father was of the bears hurting his baby and how he was willing to do whatever he had to do to protect her.

Pros

This book is touching. It goes along way in illustrating that we have much in common with animals and that maybe we need to open ourselves up to understanding their viewpoints more, just as we should try harder to understand the viewpoints of our children. The heroes of this story are the children, and they have much to teach their significant adults.
