Over in the Meadow
What I love about this traditional nursery rhyme is its singsong rhythm and how it inspires you to create your own "Over in the Meadow" rhymes. What I love about this book is its colorful and interesting illustrations and how they inspire you to create collages of your own.
Jan Thornhill did an excellent job illustrating this classic counting rhyme. By photographing common objects she created a detailed collage illustrating everything that happens in "Over in the Meadow" from sunrise to sunset. There are buzzing bees, gnawing mice, and basking lizards, as well as many other animal friends and their mothers. Children and grownups alike will love searching the meadow to identify the common objects used to create this busy bunch of creatures.
In addition to the excellent illustrations, Thornhill included picture clues with the text making this a perfect book to share with new readers. Young children can make connections between the picture and the written word and even help their parents or caregivers read. I highly recommend this book and think it will be a favorite for all families and classrooms.
Tips
Let your child use the picture clues in the text to "read" certain words.
Help your child create his own collage using pictures of common objects.
Pros
The picture clues in the text help pre-readers associate objects and animals with their written names.
