Painted Rocks (With Sticker, Paint Brush and Paint Pots)

by Maude Stephany

When I first took a look at this kit on the shelves at the local bookstore, I couldn't help but think "Who would do a book about painting rocks? I mean, what is there to painting rocks anyhow?"

It turns out that there is much more to painting rocks than I first thought possible. First there's shape, colour, texture, size and then artistic ability comes into play.

This beautiful book/kit is well done, and provides a thorough examination of the art of crafting painted rocks. The book provides full colour photographs and examples of the art of painted rocks. Each section features a particular rock shape and offers ideas for what might be painted on it, as well as the steps to make a striking painted rock.

Our nine-year old was too impatient to follow the steps to complete even a simple Eye of Horus or simple cookie design. Instead of waiting between coats, he ploughed right through and ended up with only one rock coming out as something more than a mess.

I had a go at a project, found a rock and painted it as a snow-capped mountain complete with trees dotting the hill-side and left it to dry. Unfortunately, my two year old found the rocks (her favourite outdoor playing), the paint (her favourite indoor toy) and before I knew it, my mountain was spewing molten lava.

Tips

Take a good thorough look at the book before going out rock picking. It may help you with choosing the shape of your rocks, or helping you envision what you want to do with the rocks you find.

Pros

Great way to keep the kids busy for a few hours.

Cons

Children might get impatient collecting the right rocks for the projects (you may want to do this ahead of time). Inadequate supply of paint for two or more children to do the project at the same time.
