Powerful Words: More Than 200 Years Of Extraordinary Writings By African Americans

by Jennifer Aboudi

If I could arm young people today with one type of artillery, this book would be it. This collection of writings is strength in all its purity. And if I ran the zoo (Sorry Dr. Suess), I would make a person's voice one of their forceful weapons. This book is formatted in such a way that you can't help but learn AND feel a lot. It follows a chronology of sorts, starting with the earliest scriptures and ending with the most recent selection. Each personality features a brief biography, the body of their message and "The Response" to their message. This is a profound yet blatantly simple piece of work. Instead of using cliches, it quotes real ideas, real feelings and ideals.

Tips

A book like this belongs in a learning environment, whether it be a classroom or a high traffic bookshelf. The literature does not back this book into a "multi-cultural" corner either, so don't be too quick to label it.

Pros

Who knows what kind of inspiration lurks in this collection? Why not find out for yourself?

Cons

Some may ignore the entries from lesser known authors. This would be like adding a cup of sugar to a glass of orange juice. Don't dilute what's good for you.
