Resurrection Blues

by Emily-Jane Orford

Flynn idolizes an distant uncle who introduced him to guitars and rock music of the 1960s. He thinks his uncle lived a dream existence, travelling with bands and performing around the world. As Flynn starts travelling with a band, reality sinks in. Life on the road is not all that great and some of the performances are not that earth-shattering.

He is consistently put down by the band leader, who he initially idolized, and he finally realizes he doesn't belong with a group of musicians that only see him as a guitar back-up. His dreams costs him his education, his girlfriend and many of his high school buddies. His dream almost costs him his family connections.

In the end, he finally meets with the idolized uncle and realizes that he, too, was nothing but a mirage. He quits the band and seeks his own existence doing what he always thought would be a demeaning job, teaching music. This is a very powerful revelation of the music business and the shattering of dreams.

A rather depressing story.
