Roger, the Jolly Pirate
This is a delightful tale of a pirate named Roger. Roger had a problem -- he was just far too happy to be a pirate.
Alas, jolly he was, much to the chagrin of his shipmates. Instead of striking fear into the hearts of sailors, he would tickle their funny bones with his silly grin. To make matters worse, Roger was a lousy pirate too! He couldn't even tell the difference between one end of the ship and the other.
Whenever there was going to be a battle, the other pirates banished Roger below deck so that he wouldn't embarrass them. After all, they had earned the reputation of being the most feared pirate ship of the high seas. Everyone feared them; all except one that is, the Admiral!
And so the day had finally come when the Admiral attacked Roger's ship. Once again, poor Roger was stuck down below deck while all the fighting continued up on deck. Roger so wanted to impress his shipmates and prove he should be on deck fighting alongside his comrades! Then he had an idea! Of course, his idea didn't exactly go as planned, but that turned out to be a good thing. What happened next would go down in history (pirate history of course), creating one of the greatest pirate legends of all time!
This lighthearted, humorous story was an absolute joy to read along with my kids. It is full of wonderful pictures and even includes a "Roger the Pirate" song at the end of the book. My 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son thoroughly enjoyed this book.
