Rosie in New York City: Gotcha!
Set in the early 1900's, the story describes the cruel and oppressive working conditions factory workers faced, and the harsh punishments they endured.
At her tender age, Rosie's passion ignited as she joined 20,0000 employees in a workers' strike that her mother was trying to organize before she fell ill, in order to fight for better working conditions. Her participation in the strike caused her to be assaulted on the streets, arrested and ultimately, put in jail.
I wasn't as moved reading this book as other children's books with a history lesson. Some of the slang used and the Yiddish language terms incorporated were not clear and it made reading this book to my daughter a bit challenging. I found her losing interest.
Still, it was an eye-opening experience to learn about oppression and standing up for fairness.
