Ruby Paints a Picture (I Can Read Book 1)

by Jodi Gallegos

A book for early readers about Ruby, a raccoon who is trying to paint a picture. Ruby's animal friends each want to be in the picture but none of them seem happy with Ruby's work.

Ruby is painting a picture. She doesn't yet realize how special her picture will be. As she paints, her friends each ask Ruby to paint them into the picture as well. Each friend then complains that Ruby didn't include their best feature. Has Ruby really forgotten to paint the best part of each friend?

Ruby Paints a Picture is an "I Can Read" book by Susan Hill. It is a level 1 book for beginning readers. It contains simple words and concepts for children who are starting to read on their own. Children don't need to be readers though to enjoy Ruby Paints a Picture. Repetitive patterns help younger children anticipate the story and participate in "reading."

The illustrations by Margie Moore contain very soothing colors and lines. The animal characters seem soft and cuddly. Each turn of the page brings a new round of "ooh's." This story captures the attention of several age groups and is fun for adults as well.
