Sex, Puberty, and All That Stuff: A Guide to Growing Up

by Bonnie Myerson

Author Jacqui Bailey has written a 112-page guide intended for pre-teens and teenagers (11 through 16). This paperback book has a vast quantity of information about growing up.

Sex, Puberty And All That Stuff uses teen lingo and slang to explain crucial information. It is blunt and candid with explanations about puberty, relationships and sexual activity. This book uncovers many myths and truths about sex, pregnancy, masturbation, and sexual transmitted diseases.

There are separate chapters for "Boys stuff" and "Girls stuff." Each chapter offers details of what each gender can expect while going through the course of puberty, explaining about body parts, their function, and emotional and physical changes.

This book also indicates appropriate and non-appropriate behaviors toward one self and others. It educates teens to recognize abusive, offensive situations and guides them on how to get assists.

Author Jacqui Bailey does not encourage sexual relationships, but offers tips on safe sex for those who are going to be sexual active.

At the back of the book, there is a section called Useful Stuff, there one can find numbers and contact information about adoption, abortions and homosexuality.

Most pages have comic-strip-like illustrations. Some of the illustrations are rather unambiguous.

In my opinion this book is too explicit and forward. I also think that there should be two books, one for male and one for female teens.

I think this book would make a wonderful tool for parents; it can help them use the right jargon when talking about puberty, sex and all that stuff to their children. For those children who parents are unavailable or unwilling to guide them in a healthy and nurturing manner, this book would be an accommodating second choice.

Tips

I think the ideal situation would be that parents use this as a guide, and pick and choose what they think is appropriate.

Pros

This book covers a vast amount of information and uses a teenage spirit.

Cons

I am not ready to allow my fourteen-year-old son to view this book because I feel that there are some details he does not need to know at this moment. However I took out some valuable information and discussed it with him.
