Shaoey and Dot: Bug Meets Bundle

by Jodi Gallegos

Dot is a ladybug who lives in China. One morning as she is eating breakfast and doing what bugs do, she hears a strange sound. Dot goes to the village to investigate and finds an abandoned baby in a basket. Dot is quite taken with the baby and the two become traveling companions and friends. The baby, along with Dot, is taken to an orphanage full of babies. After weeks of waiting the baby girl, Shaoey (SHOW-ee) is finally taken to meet her adoptive American family. Shoey and Dot are then on their way to their new home with their new family.

Shaoey and Dot is a very sweet book about adoption. It was written by Christian recording artist Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth. It is about and inspired by their experience adopting their daughters from China. Although the book is written in rhyme it does not always flow or rhyme very smoothly. The base story though is very endearing and sweet. There is a brief introduction about the Chapman's experience with adoption, the scriptural basis for their beliefs and about their program. The illustrations were done by Mary Beth's brother Jim Chapman. The illustrations are warm and beautiful. My favorite illustration is from when the baby and Dot first meet. Dot is on the baby's nose and only two almond shaped eyes, a nose and Dot's back are visible.

My kids really like reading this story, they love bugs and babies. It would be a wonderful gift for a family who has considered or is considering adoption.
