Simon and the Wind

by Dayle Eisner

This is a book about a boy named Simon who loves to watch things fly. He decides that he wants to fly in the wind, but then learns that he can't. So he goes back to just enjoying watching things fly in the wind.

This book is just like the others in Gilles Tibo's Simon series. They are full of imagination and in the case of this book; it gives a good lesson as to why Simon is unable to fly.

In my Grade 1 and 2 classes, reading this book lead to a great discussion on which objects/animals can fly and why.

There are smaller pictures on top of the words for picture cues and the illustrations are wonderful for emergent readers. They can look at the pictures and find all the words they are learning and have a visual aid right there for assistance.

I also like the fact that there are not too many words on each page. Sometimes that deters apprehensive readers from sitting down with a book, but this is non-threatening and makes the reader feel comfortable and confident in reading it alone.
