Slangalicious: Where We Got That Crazy Lingo
A super cool look into the "ins and outs" of slang through the centuries and around the world.
"A crowd of bun pups, for table four," said the diner waitress adjusting her modern 1950's uniform.
If you were in the year 1955, this diner slang phrase would make sense. This kicky slang phrase of 1955 means "Three hot dogs for table four".
We use slang everyday, often times not knowing where the slang reference comes from or when it was most popular. "Slangalicious: Where We Got That Crazy Lingo" is a wonderfully entertaining nonfiction book about the origin and uses of slang. Many children find nonfiction books dry and unappealing. However, this non-fiction book is presented in a colorful story format that makes learning fun.
The book centers around a student project on slang. We follow the main character, a young boy, as he learns the "ins and outs" of slang. Beginning his assignment by researching on the computer, he comes across two computer helpers, Lexie and Edmund. These two cyberspace guides enlighten the reader on slang of different times, different types of work, and even different places around the world. The end of the book has an effective outline and wrap-up of what was learned throughout the story.
I enjoyed recognizing the different slang words and phrases. This book was a "blast" to read! I would recommend it not only for 9-12 year olds, but parents as well.
