Simon in Summer
This is one of many in Gilles Tibo's Simon series. These books capture the imagination of children through pleasant illustrations and descriptive writing. "Simon in summer" is an appropriate read for emergent and fluent readers, ages 6 - 9 years.
There are fabulous picture-cues available for more difficult words and the topic of seasons is a familiar one, which lends itself nicely to any lesson or discussion on comparing the seasons.
Children can relate to this story because they too can compare themselves to Simon and think about why they would not want summer to end.
The only things that I would comment on are the pictures and that the colors do not clearly show that it is in fact summer. When I read this with my grade 1-2 class, they were describing how the colors seemed colder than summer. Also they noticed that the title did not have proper capitals (the word summer did not have a capital). Kids are very observant even at such a young age!
Overall, we loved the book and found that it was a great addition to our seasons and temperature unit!
