Space Pirates: A Map Reading Adventure
In this book, Scoular Anderson has created a unique combination of activities in one book. It's a comic book filled with wacky characters, a kind of "I Spy" search book, a map reading activity, and a pirate treasure adventure. It's a great activity book with hours of treasure hunting fun for ages 9 - 12.
"Space Pirates: A Map Reading Adventure" is a book like no other I've ever come across. Geared for older children with some basic understanding of maps and a yen for comic books, the book is filled with double-page spreads of maps where dozens of hidden treasure chests lie. The task set for readers is to be able to follow the detailed, and sometimes tricky, maps to find only those chests containing treasure.
This is encased in the pirate adventure on the spaceship Sleepy Sheep which has a zany crew of alien types who are trying to find the treasure before their arch enemy, One Hand Hulke. On each spread there is part of the story, done in comic book style with speech bubbles, and the clues to the map. I found the maps to be challenging and fun to look at, and each one contains a bonus mutant animal, like swamp squirrels or sharkcrabs, to find and count, as in an "I Spy" game or "Where's Waldo?" book. All the basic aspects of map reading are used, including a compass, key, and scale as well as picture clues to help navigate each area of the planet Salmagundy.

Pros
Cons
For those who dislike comic strip stories, the book looks chaotic and not user-friendly.
