Stephanie's Ponytail

by Kim Ramsey

Robert Munsch's children's books are known for their humor. Munsch's sense of what is funny for children shines in Stephanie's Ponytail.

A young girl named Stephanie asks her mother for "a nice ponytail coming right out the back." When Stephanie gets to school, everyone calls her ponytail "ugly", but the next day, all of the girls have copied her. Stephanie gets creative with ways to make ponytails, but every day, the same thing happens. Her hairstyle is called "ugly", but the next day, it is copied.

Even the boys and teachers start styling their hair like Stephanie's! Finally, Stephanie find a way to stop the copying once and for all. She informs her schoolmates that she is so tired of being copied that she has decided to shave her head. The next day, everyone comes to school with shaved heads. Everyone, that is, except Stephanie!

Tips

This is a picture book, which to some might mean it's only for younger children but it isn't. My six-year-old daughter laughed from the first page on. Although my nine-year-old didn't want to read it at first (after all, it is a picture book), by the end, she couldn't stop laughing.

Pros

Munsch has done a great job of developing Stephanie's character in a small number of words. Stephanie's solutions to the problem of being copied are creative and entertaining.

Cons

Since reading the book, my six-year-old keeps asking me to do her hair like Stephanie's!
