Stir, Squirt, Sizzle: A Nick Cookbook

by Claudia Ann Sodaro

Published by Chronicle Books, this cookbook starts out with the healthiest of intentions: "be safe, be prepared, be clean, be healthy and be creative." The contents on these 56 pages is broken down into: "Gobble and Gulp, Crunch and Munch, Chomp and Chew, and finally Gulp and Guzzle." All the recipes, except for a couple like "Patrick's snack-tricks" and "wild boy berry waffles", call for adult help and supervision. The book is laid out in a simple-to-read manner with step by step procedures and ingredients clearly listed. The sections of the book are cleverly indexed by pictures of a pizza slice, popcorn, a chocolate-chip cookie, and a cup.

A conflict arises: Children love the book; why wouldn't they love the recipes? The majority of these recipes require sugar, corn syrup, marshmallows, chocolate, syrup, and candy. Parents are looking for healthy foods and snacks for their children. One wonders if the sources of these recipes come from people who ignore the obesity problem in our children.
