Sumi's First Day of School Ever

by Amber Johns

Young Sumi is nervous about the first day of school, just like other children. However, Sumi does not understand English and she thinks school might be lonely and scary. But, Sumi soon finds out that school is a great place to be.

Sumi's First Day of School Ever is saturated in uniqueness as a little Korean girl faces the challenges of the first day of school. Sumi does not speak English, making the first day of school especially challenging. The book depicts the very natural feelings that a child, any child, may face on the first day of school. The building is big with big stairs and there are a lot of children that make quite a commotion. Some children are nice and some are not so nice. Sumi evaluates her first day through the circumstances that she faces. A smile from her teacher makes her feel less lonely, having to draw a picture makes her feel less scared and eventually another little girl wants to be Sumis friend. Sumi knows how to introduce herself and that is all she needs to say to find a friend named Mary. The first day of school turns out to be a good day.

Tips

Perhaps explaining that Sumi is from another country and does not speak English before you begin reading. The book does not make that very clear when you first start reading it.

Pros

Very thoughtful. Encouraging to children in general, but especially to those with language barriers.
