Tally O'Malley (MathStart 2)

by Jodi Gallegos

The O'Malley family is going on a road trip. Eric, Bridget and little Nell are heading to the beach with their parents. It is a long ride and the kids are getting bored. "Why don't we play a tally game?," mom asks. They decide to count cars first. Each kid picks a color and uses tally marks to record the number of cars they see in that color. The winner gets to wear the O'Malley tally medal.

Tally O'Malley is a Level 2, MathStart book by Stuart J. Murphy. It is designed to help children ages 6 and up understand the concept of tally marks for counting and keeping track of objects. For parents, there is an information section that includes helpful hints and activities. In addition to the tally games and activities, there are several tally sheets included in the illustrations throughout the book. Because the information is presented in a very clear manner and incorporated into a fun story, it makes the learning more enjoyable for kids. Even my four-year-old is starting to understand tally marks.

This is a great opportunity for kids to learn a new skill (tallying) while practicing an old one (reading).
