The Best Halloween of All
The best part of Halloween is the costume, but seven-year-old Ben has definitely not enjoyed any of the costumes from his past six Halloweens. His mom likes to sew, and his dad likes to build. Together his parents have always concocted Halloween outfits for Ben and his older brother.
However, Ben always seems to get stuck being the itchier, sweatier more uncomfortable one of the pair. For example, when he was two he wore a scratchy rabbit suit and was supposed to jump up behind a giant wooden hat prop on cue from his brother who was dressed as a magician. Then when he was four, Ben wore a big wedge of wooden cheese to go along with his brother's rat costume. The problem was the costume was so heavy, poor Ben couldn't walk up the steps to ask for candy, and his brother forgot to ask for him. On his sixth Halloween his mother made him a suit to look like a bunch of grapes. Ben's classmates thought he belonged in an underwear commercial, and he couldn't sit down all afternoon because there were grapes sewn to his behind.
After flipping through the family photo album and remembering all these disastrous Halloweens, Ben declares he will make his own costume this year. And he does, making his seventh Halloween The Best Halloween of All.
This clever, funny story is written by Susan Wojciechowski. Susan Meddaugh adds to the humor with her delightful illustrations. This book is great to read aloud, although my about to be third grader enjoyed reading it alone. It's a great holiday book to add to your library.
