The Best Seat in Second Grade (I Can Read Book 2)

by Candice Cooper

Join Sam and the class hamster, George Washington, as they spend a day at the science museum with the rest of the second grade.

Sam has the best seat in second grade. He sits next to the class hamster, George Washington. Each week, Sam's teacher picks a Hamster Helper, but it's never Sam. Tired of waiting for a turn, Sam decides to take along an extra buddy when the class takes a field trip to the science museum.

Sam is determined to show George Washington the world outside room 75. Hidden in Sam's coat pocket, Sam smuggles the hamster into the planetarium, the wind tunnel, and the funny mirrors with the hamster sneezing the whole way through.

When the class stops for lunch, Sam sneaks away to the Animal Zone to introduce George Washington to fellow hamsters. When the class discovers Sam is missing and tracks him down at the Hamster Habitat, George Washington gets startled and jumps into the enclosure getting lost in the group of countless honey-colored rodents.

The class panics and they all spread out to try and locate the class mascot. Thinking it's impossible, they become discouraged and angry with Sam for bringing the hamster along. Then they hear one tiny sneeze and, just like that, George Washington is found and safely returned to his rightful home in room 75.

An adorably illustrated tale, "The Best Seat in Second Grade" is a fun read with a good lesson attached. Although it's tough to wait for a turn at a special task, it's necessary to follow the rules and be patient because acting hastily will never produce a favorable outcome.
