The Body Book: Recipes for Natural Body Care

by Adriana Puckett

This is the kind of book and kit that I would have died for as a teenage girl. I loved the idea of washing my hair in lemon juice as a natural lightener or taking a milk bath to soften my skin. Being able to concoct different toners, scrubs and rinses from things in the house and the garden was infinitely appealing. Klutz's Body Book delivers lots of wholesome fun with its lively book and companion home spa kit.

The book is spiral-bound for easy reference while mixing things up in the kitchen and bathroom. There are four main sections: Face, Hands and Feet, Hair and Bath. In the face section you learn how to make scrubs, steams, masks, toners and facials. Most recipes used completely ordinary ingredients. The Banana Honey mask, for example, is good for moisturizing all skin types and calls for just ½ ripe banana and 1 Tbsp of honey.

The book also details techniques, such as buffing nails and exfoliating your feet. I personally cannot wait to try out the Sugar scrub for softening feet, which is just sugar, oil and lemon. The bath infusions and salt recipes are also fascinating.

The "home spa kit" comes in a plastic "SpaBox" (which is recloseable). It hides some essential oils, a pumice stone, muslin bag to hold bath infusions, nail file, headband and more. This is so great to have all of these tools right at your fingertips, as sometimes such things as muslin bags are a little difficult to find in the cosmetic department.

Tips

I would recommend this resource mainly to girls ages 9 — 14 or so. Before that some of the techniques, such as heating water for steams, may need an older assistant. After that age, girls may be more into cosmetics, but may still find this book an attractive addition to their beauty repertoire.

Pros

The book's design is attractive. Close-up pictures of multicultural teenage girls looking naturally beautiful as they apply scrubs, have pedicures with friends and more imply that this is a fun thing to do alone or with a friend. Delivers wholesome fun.

Cons

A few rings of the spiral-bound came loose, so I have that annoying problem of having to adjust things back where they belong every time I turn a page.
