The Boy in the Drawer

by Carolyn R. Drebin

Shelley and her parents must find a way of dealing with a little boy who is making a mess of their house.

Shelley, a little girl who is not very tidy, finds a boy in her room, making a mess. When she tells her mom, her mother simply says to clean it up, so she does. But then the little boy makes a mess of her bed. Once again, Shelley has to clean it up. And so it goes as the little boy makes more and more of a mess, and Shelley gets angry with him. Each time he gets even bigger, and makes even more of a mess.

Finally, Shelley and her parents realize that by being extra nice to the boy, he will shrink back down to size. And when her mother kisses him, he disappears entirely. And then they hug their daughter and she cleans up the rest of the mess on her own.

This is a sweet story with several messages such as "you get more bees with honey," and listen to your children. The subtext may be difficult for smaller children to grasp, but they'll still enjoy the story itself, as well as the illustrations.

As usual, Munsch demonstrates his uncanny way with words and his ability to tell tell appealing stories that everyone in the family will enjoy.
