The Case of the Halloween Ghost

by Emily-Jane Orford

A simple story as told by Hank, the cowdog. Hank thinks he's found a ghost and, as self-appointed head of ranch security, he feels its his job to get rid of the ghost.

This is a rather lighthearted story. Hank, the cowdog is our narrator. He follows Slim, the cowhand, around the ranch and tries to sniff out problems without getting himself into trouble. Hank isn't very good at staying out of trouble and his mishaps add to the humour of the story. As the story progresses, Hank continues to voice his opinion of his master, Slim. His general opinion of "man" is based on this Slim character. Slim is clumsy, sloppy, careless and a bit of a slob. Hank feels embarrassed for Slim, especially when Slim tries to impress the lovely Miss Viola. Slim invites Miss Viola for dinner and he shows no shame when she tries to hang her coat in his closet and she is almost buried in blankets, saddles, etc.

The story progresses slowly through one mishap to another, trying to create a sense of mystery. Who is the ghost? Is it really a ghost? Can Hank get rid of the ghost? The story just doesn't catch the reader's attention.

Pros

Easy to read. Very simple story.

Cons

The grammar is awkward at times. For example, Hank says, "I gathered my courage and raised up." In another part he says, "All I could figger..." I think an easy to read book needs a good sense of language and grammar. Young people learn their language from what they read or what is read to them. Also, the story has little direction and too much silliness.
